about

Into The Modern takes you on a journey past poprock anthems and intimate guitars, from symphonic arrangements to experimental electronics, all with the wit and wisdom of Simon's poetic lyrics.

Into The Modern explores dualities and contradictions in the modern world. Where does the natural end and the artificial begin? How do we understand humanity in a world of violence and self-interest? How does it feel to experience the world through technology?

Into The Modern defies simple categorization, blending disparate styles and sounds to forge new directions in modern pop music. It draws from many traditions, including folk, funk, indie rock, new wave, dance and electronic music.

Track Name: Is This Art
you’re on the straight
you’re on the narrow
you’re on the blank space
you’re on the darkness

you’re in the ether
you’re crowding in
you’re in the headlights
you’re hiding everything

these could be bones
these could be places
these could be tides
these could be feelings

my only vision is peripheral
I’m only standing on one foot at a time
this is the image on the tip of my tongue

these are the colours
these are the boundaries
this is the vision
it could be everything

it could be dumb
it could be brilliant
it could be flies
these could be feelings

so-o-o I ruminate
so-o-o is this art
you tried to dismember
so-o-o I validate
so-o-o is this real
found in december
Track Name: Armed To The Teeth
last night on earth
there was a killing in the middle of the street
people gathered around
some were looking for something to eat

they try to feed themselves
on the island retreats of the rich
but it never gets old
nah it never gets old

you can’t remember me
you can’t remember me
armed to the teeth
you can’t remember me
you can’t remember me
or anything underneath

first night alone
there was a sound in the corner of the room
try to yell my name
but it just shivers on the enamel of my teeth

you wrap your arms around the one who posted dreams

sometimes when I’m armed to the teeth I kill my love
Track Name: Modern Scars
look at these figures on the boulevard
they are sculpted like movie stars
prosthetic busts and chiseled skin
shoes I wish I was walking in

how ominous
how ominous

my dog is waiting for her feather bed
my feed is full of pics of her getting fed
I drink a vodka before the bar
I push my chest out like I’m a star

how ominous
how ominous
how ominous
how ominous

put on the stolen gloves oh turn off the light
feel up the surgeon's scars oh so much alike

night strobes like a tv screen
shocked face only a tween
feed the followers snips and scraps
through these devices, rooms and apps

how ominous
how ominous
how ominous (to be literal)
how ominous (to be twitteral)
how ominous (to disconnect)
how ominous (to unreflect)
how ominous (the kids want more)
how ominous (never seen it before)

peel off these stolen gloves oh turn on the light
tape up the invisible scars oh so much alike
these are my american scars oh so much alike
Track Name: Infidels
if I was floating in the ether
I would die alone
if I was wrapped in golden garments
I would spy the throne

don’t you molest time or patronage
and then just fall upon the sword
all this power has a precedent
you might be be humbled by a whore

peace on earth goodwill to men
but not the infidels
call off your men
they’re choking me
my eyes are bulging

war on earth peace in heaven
you better pray to me
fall down again
stay far down on your knees

if I could pray to supernova
I would see the light

the universe can handle wreckage
of a little carbon ball
I am firing all these cylinders
to make a point I cannot prove
Track Name: High On Charisma
I heard your lover slipped through the night
I'm only reading what you want me to read
Under the covers, out of the light
I'm only seeing what you want me to see

I'm taking down all the portraits tonight
In which the party delights
Re-education gave me roles to recite
But I kept my wits out of spite

This isn't funny, this isn't trite
I'm only hearing what you want me to hear
These marble gargoyles taking flight
I'm only building what you want me to build

I'm in the arms of the leader tonight
His godliness makes me tight
I'm getting high on charisma and fright
Still got my left and my right

You saw my lover tied to a kite
You're only dreaming what they want you to dream
You cut the tendons ever so slight
You're only feeling what they want you to feel

And now I'm down with my eyes to the light
This feels so right, all this might
I'm underground but my voice is polite
I kept my wits out of spite
Track Name: Music
when the light shines up from the quicksand
you were quicker than a lightning bolt
faster than the trial

your book learning never got you anywhere
you were raised by an ever-present everywhere
always in denial

the songs that saved you
were written in a shaky hand
the deserts that graved you
didn’t have a single grain of sand

now i’m sitting on a little patch of asphalt
on an island in the middle of the universe
just working on my tan

when does anyone have time to do anything
most the time i just sit and let the phone ring
but on the other hand

the songs that saved you
were written in a shaky hand
the deserts that graved you
didn’t have a single grain of sand

if the darkness blew up like a cannonball
I would hold you with my ears on fire
back against the wall

we could talk ‘bout the space in between us
all the spaces inside of everything
that make us what we are

the songs that saved you
were written in a shaky hand
the deserts that graved you
didn’t have a single grain of sand

if I trace out the edges
cut out the middle part
leave you with a frame

would you grasp at the corners
fill in the emptiness
take away the blame

the songs that saved you
were written in a shaky hand
the deserts that graved you
didn’t have a single grain of sand
Track Name: Ocean Sick
what do we learn
from the miners
just how to recover

what do we burn
in the furnace
anything black

bomb the hills
scrape the ocean
just don’t stop the flow

bound ourselves
by desires
that we can’t fill

when your body gets ocean sick
you gotta lay down flat and be one with it
you gotta - climb up over it
leave the body alone

when your body gets motion sick
you gotta bring things up and be done with it
you gotta - shimmy under it
keep the body at home

everybody's devotion sick
we gotta fuel these bodies with open pits
we drag a - razor over it
make a body a clone

all my brothers were there with me
they were laid down under a flare with me
they were told their riches were coming like drones
better butter the bones

standing in a tenement house
looking at my phone
I step over the ragged and loused
searching for my clone

reverse the flow
tame the waters
time can’t turn back

when you’re underground
you don’t hear the foghorn
just feel the rumble

you feel like it’s over
it’s getting hot

you feel like you’re sober
but you’re not

when your body gets ocean sick
you gotta lay down flat and be one with it
you gotta - climb up over it
leave the body alone

everybody's devotion sick
we gotta fuel these bodies with open pits
we drag a - razor over it
make a body a clone
Track Name: Measures
you were only measuring your life

to take a measure of a thing
you have to stop and let it sing

don’t mind me - I’m just moving here
don’t find me - I’m just cowering

did you pour a little water in the sea
did you name your sons and daughters after me
do you dream about the pictures in your head
did you find yourself a sinner in the thread

to take a measure of a thing
you have to stop and let it sing

don’t mind me
look down from above
I’m just moving here
like a martyr
on all fours
bathed in blood

don’t find me
look up from below
I’m just cowering
like an angel
hell I’m on top
in the snow

you tell me your name
I only hear
these syllables

we think it’s a game
they live in fear
we’re unreliable
Track Name: This Is How We Love
we felt the wave touch us fully clothed
we drink the tides as they ebb and flow
we thought this life would be long enough
to tell each other bout this love

the star light will find us wherever we go ohh

but now we’ve got two lives who depend on us woahh

downton Montreal
parc du portugal
on the cobblestones as we walked home
you kissed me

on the bus or train
rue de la reine
taking off our clothes no one knows
two by two

the desert night
by candlelight
heartbeat on a therm-a-rest

here we stand
hand in hand
down the stairs on Centre street

in this quake
bones will shake
i’ll hold you and you’ll hold me

on the open road
with two kids in tow
this is how we love
you and me
